How do you truly test innovation?
Not in theory, but in real-world conditions, shaped by constraints, complexity, and diverse perspectives.
This was the driving force behind EID’s recent collaboration with ISCTE Executive Education, for a deep-dive session within the Postgraduate Program in Agile Project and Business Management at ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa.
Participants were challenged to apply agile methodologies to a real Defence sector case: an environment where precision, reliability, and security are critical.
ISCTE and Executive Education: Bridging Academia and Industry
ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa is one of Portugal’s leading universities, widely recognized for its strong connection to the business world and its focus on innovation and critical thinking.
Through ISCTE Executive Education, the institution extends this mission by delivering programs designed for professionals facing real organizational challenges. These programs emphasize practical application, collaboration, and impact.
The Postgraduate Program in Agile Project and Business Management reflects this approach — preparing professionals to navigate complex environments where adaptability and speed are essential.
A Real-World Stress Test for EID’s Innovation Model
For EID, this collaboration went far beyond participation. It was an opportunity to actively challenge and validate its innovation model.
By opening a real business challenge to external participants, EID deliberately exposed its processes to new ways of thinking, alternative approaches, and critical questioning.
The result was a genuine stress test – not only of proposed solutions, but of how innovation itself is approached within the organization.
Applying Agile to High-Demand Environments
One of the most compelling aspects of this experience was seeing agile methodologies applied to a sector traditionally associated with rigid structures and strict control.
Participants demonstrated that:
- agility and rigor are not mutually exclusive
- agile frameworks can enhance responsiveness even in highly regulated environments
This reinforces the growing relevance of agile practices across industries – including those with the highest operational demands.
The Power of External Perspectives
Organizations often operate within established patterns. Breaking those patterns is where innovation begins.
The interaction with participants brought:
- fresh interpretations of existing challenges;
- alternative approaches to problem-solving;
- constructive questioning of assumptions.
This diversity of thought is a critical driver of meaningful innovation.
Innovation as a Collaborative Effort
One key takeaway stands out: innovation does not happen in isolation.
It emerges at the intersection of:
- industry
- academia
- emerging talent
Creating these connections — where practical experience meets critical thinking — is essential for building sustainable value.
Looking Ahead
EID would like to thank all participants for their dedication and rigor, as well as ISCTE Executive Education, particularly Professor Carlos Jerónimo and Professor Leandro Pereira, for their collaboration and commitment to excellence.
Special recognition also goes to Carlos Imperadeiro, EID’s Innovation and Product Strategy Manager, and Pedro Araújo Costa, Director of Programs and Products, for their valuable contributions during the deep-dive session. Their expertise and engagement were instrumental in bridging theory and practice, and in ensuring that this collaboration delivered real insights for both participants and EID’s innovation model.
Initiatives like this reinforce the importance of investing in knowledge ecosystems and collaborative innovation.
Because ultimately, the future is not built alone: it is built together.
